I’m Jeff Dolan. I grew up mostly on the coast of North Carolina in a God-fearing military family. Jesus was my first love, then followed art, rap music, poetry, video, investing, girls, and board sports. After playing bass in a rock band throughout high school and college, running a Web design company, and graduating with a multimedia journalism degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, I was ready to start my dot com, find my bride, live the dream, and leave my legacy. Then I grew up.
I joined a dot com instead, learned words like single, rat race, and taxes, and generally went through a quarter-life crisis along with all my friends who were told we could change the world. We of course went on to witness the aftermath of 9-11, the dot com and real estate bubble bursts, and the extreme narcissism of the “i” culture. We quickly realized that the world is not a place that is very receptive to being changed. It likes going to hell in a handbasket. Especially making documentaries about it.
But dreams die hard and God never fails, and just when my life felt like it was stalling out, I found my future bride. She had no idea it was love at first sight. In about a month, I sold my place, got a new job, and moved to Nashville to marry her. The rush of giving up all you have for all you want is like no other! I liken it only to finding Christ.
I am now living the dream in Music City, with a few adjustments, and working on the legacy part. I’m a work in progress. And the struggle can be hard sometimes. These days I value simplicity. Health. Good stories. Community. And getting involved locally doing meaningful work. Just being here has revived my creativity in so many ways. I believe God gave us creativity so that we can find new ways to love people and share His grace despite the chaos of these last days. I hope this site is one way we can get to know each other and share our stories.
“If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don’t do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children, you hurt me, you hurt the planet, you shame the angels who watch over you and you spite God Almighty, who created you and only you with your unique gifts, for the sole purpose of nudging the human race one millimeter further along its path back to God.”
—Steven Pressfield, The War of Art
