A Million Slumdog Prayers

Last weekend I watched the 8-Oscar winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” directed by Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan. The unique story and intense imagery definitely lived up to the hype, and I was struck with how resilient not only people in general are through the most horrific conditions and experiences, but how resilient children are. Especially orphan children. In India, there are millions. Seeing and filming their plight firsthand a little over a year ago gave me new eyes through which to see this film.

The video in this post includes some of the footage I shot while in India, and churches are using it all over the world to pray for India. I hope as you watch it, you will pray for these beautiful people. They have such a rich culture. And yet, the harsh poverty of sinful humanity does not escape them. None of us can escape this reality. Even those of us who are considered rich compared to the majority of the world are poor.

When I was confronted with the material poverty both in India and in the film’s portrayal of India, I was reminded that any of us could have been born into a slumdog lifestyle. Any of us could lose every material possession we own. What then would we have?

My hope is that you see with fresh eyes the real portrayal of poverty in the film, and how Jamal Malik’s abundance of integrity, character, and love is far more desirable than millions of dollars or rupees. True resilience lives in the intangible heart.

My prayer is that you will grow in true riches.

Start Today

If you claim the Jesus of Christianity, don’t miss today. Easter. It’s our foundation of faith. Our starting point. Without the reality of what Jesus has accomplished on the cross, we are absolute fools. If He is just a nice guy, we are the most ridiculous movement in the history of the world. But if He is eternal love, the reality of every ideal we have but cannot find on this earth, God incarnate without sin, today is peace beyond understanding. Joy unmatched. Because He reigns! That’s faith. And that is why it is so important not to miss today. It is not just another holy day.

So where do we go from here? As Christians, it is not our job to predict the future. Nor worry about it. But to go where and when God calls, to love God with 100% of who we are, to love people as we love ourselves, and to enjoy Him forever, which is when He is most pleased.

After these things, our lives are a blank canvas, an adventure ready to begin, a story about to be written. Be creative. Take these foundational, purposeful principles from the Creator’s own words and go. Start today. Life is short and eternity is waiting. Love now. Think forever.

You might get hurt. You might get thrown in jail. You might make poor decisions. You might be average. You might lose it all. Do it anyway. At the end of the day, you have God and His strength, His love, and His plan for you. Good and bad, it’s all for your benefit. Wipe your canvas clean and start creating again. Even if you are empty and powerless, start letting His love flow through you to others. Give and go. Alone we can do nothing. With God all things are possible. Go!

Love Will Find You

Video: Publicis Mojo and Patrick Hughes.

Have you ever met someone that makes life worth living? And just by knowing this person exists you cannot help but smile? You could be rotting away in corporate America, stuck in a depressing cycle of monotony, and grasping at anything and everything that can save you or distract you from reality. And then it happens. Love finds you. Some see it and act. Others are not ready for the transformation. Too much sacrifice and risk.

It’s the stuff of legend. Of epic battles. Of creative genius. Of revolution. Of grace. Of God.

Love.

It changes your life. Your attitude. Your dreams. Your choices. Your safety. Your reality. Your creativity. Everything.

You cannot create it for it is not of this world. You can only pour it into others.

I marry her in 10 days!

Fan Acquisition Cost

So I’m here in Nashville with my ear to the ground. The music industry is in upheaval. The game is changing. Some are holding on to the ‘industry’ as Seth Godin describes, while others are done predicting the future and starting to react to the tools and platforms available. Gary Vaynerchuk makes this point clearly. Reactionary business is now the name of the game. Spend time on what is happening now instead of worrying about the future or holding on to the past.

I recently went to hear a buddy play downtown, and he had been touring on his own to small crowds as any hardworking musician does these days. His CD sales were lacking, and he was racking his brain on what to do next that would get him to that next level. He gave a solid performance, and after the show he had several well wishers pat him on the back as they walked out. His eyes lit up in gratitude as he stood around his merch table.

I congratulated him for a job well done and watched for the interactions at the table. Almost everyone who said they had a great time, enjoyed his music, or were glad he came kept walking. They didn’t buy his CD or t-shirt, or even touch them. Maybe they remembered his name and how to spell it, will go home to Google it, find his website, and buy his music there. Or maybe they were all fans already. I doubt it. They paid to have a relaxing time after work. They weren’t interested in being a fan or following anyone. They got what they wanted. The question is, did he?

Forget Opinions. Just create.

I just read about Joaquin Phoenix deciding to put down acting and pick up hip-hop. I couldn’t be more inspired! Why do so many people have to hate on him? So what if he plays a great Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, the brother wants to rap.

I find it unbelievable how people just cannot handle it when someone builds a reputation for doing X and then decides to do Y. Life is short. There are 50 billion things to do in this world, and the man wants to do more than one. Something that gets his creativity going more than acting. Cut him some slack. Seriously. And it matters little why he is making this decision.

How many white boys want to bust it straight up, but the stereotype is stacked against them? I hear all the time that hip-hop is an attitude, a movement, something that crosses all barriers to unify people with music. Joaquin’s a test, and so far, all I hear is negativity. Just like when Michael Jordan tried to play baseball. Just like when Garth Brooks went emo.

I had tinkered around with hip-hop when I played in a rock band back in school because I admire its passion, energy, and simplicity. Now, I just might pick up where I left off. Thanks Joaquin.

A Multimedia Artist’s Dream

Cannon EOS 5D Mark II

If you’re a photographer slash videographer slash musician slash one-man multimedia band like me, today is a great time to be alive. As Thanksgiving comes to a close here in Nashville, TN, I am thankful for one of the biggest game changers ever to hit the image capture industry — the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

Why? Convergence. This baby can make video look better than most video cameras on the market, and it’s a professional photography camera. With a limited budget, telling a story on a professional level in more than one way used to be extremely difficult. You either had to commit to photography or videography. They each had their own fields, expertise, and equipment. Today, that’s all changing.

I have been waiting for this to come for a long time. Between RED bringing modularity and ground breaking digital cinema technology to the masses and Nikon and Canon bringing video to the photography world, all we need now is for someone like Digidesign or Shure to step in and build an audio capture add-on. This is only the beginning in a long line of devices that will converge into one master capture device, making guys like me able to work faster, better and cheaper. Not to mention watch our multimedia art, visual story telling, image directing, whatever-we-will-call-it niche grow.

One telling article I ran across earlier this year on PopPhoto.com, The Photographer As Director, called us visual chameleons and imagemakers. Is anyone else actually glad we are finally getting some attention here?

Expressing and communicating through any and all media through less and less devices is happening. Once the tools level the entry barriers, it will increasingly become more and more about what you have to say and how you say it. Stop dreaming and start creating.

Today, we can.
